Quick Guide: How To Segment Your Customers On Shopify

Understanding and implementing customer segmentation is essential for any Shopify store looking to gain valuable insights and foster growth.

Shopify has specific segmentation capabilities to segment those customers according to their behavior.

But without third-party tools, it is not powerful enough to make your marketing campaigns more specific and productive, boosting customer satisfaction.

This guide will introduce you to By the Numbers.

BtN is an app for effective Shopify Customer Segmentation and reporting.

But let’s not be hasty and start with the most basic concept.

What is Customer Segmentation?

Shopify Customer Segmentation involves grouping customers based on various characteristics or behaviors.

By the Numbers offers an array of segmentation features, such as:

  • Number of Orders
  • Average Order Value
  • Total Sales
  • Total Refunds
  • Total Discounts
  • Days Since First or Last Order
  • Number of Items Purchased
  • Date of First or Last Order
  • Email
  • Email Verification Status
  • Accepts Marketing
  • Customer Loyalty Group (Dormant, At Risk, Promising, Defecting, Recent, Best, Loyal)
  • UTM Campaign, Medium or Source
  • Product(s) Purchased by Name, SKU, Vendor or Variant
  • Discount Code
  • Customer Tag
  • Customer Location
  • Sales Percentile
  • LTV

When you start segmenting, you allow your brand to connect in a more targeted, specific way with your audience.

Segments can be crafted based on names, operators and filter values.

As a result, communication will improve, leading to a boost in communication and marketing efficiency.

But how to do it on Shopify?

It’s a straightforward process, to be honest.

Let’s jump straight into it.

How to Start Segmenting Your Customers

To get started with By the Numbers, install the app and open either the preset segments or custom segments section from the left navigation panel under the ‘Customers’ heading.

They are designed to give you insightful data on your store and customers.

The ‘Segment Details’ page further enriches this with stats like Average Order Value and Customer LTV. Additionally Email marketing platforms like Klaviyo also help engage and win back customers. You can learn more if you access our guide on how to master email marketing in Shopify.

Use the ‘Create Segment’ button to create custom segments. You can set filters to group customers based on specific behaviours, such as their first purchased product. This flexibility allows for tailored reports, giving you a focused view of customer performance.

Creating custom segments is what makes a difference.

Thanks to By the Numbers, it is a very straightforward process.

To create custom segments based on different customer behaviors, click the ‘Create Segment’ button on the top right of the page.

You can then designate things like Name, Description, and Filters.

You’ll see something like this:

You can then designate things like Name, Description, and Filters.

Filters can be used to group customers based on their behavior.

For example, filtering for ‘Purchased Product (First order only)’ lets you create a segment based on the first product that customers purchased.

If you want to see the complete list of Filters, visit the Help Guide.

SAFETY FIRST, though.

Once you’ve created your account and picked your filters, make sure you click on ‘test segment’ to ensure it’s functional.

This will also provide you with robust data about your customer segment.

Relevant Customer Segment information

You’ve reached this far, and are probably wondering why this is useful.

We bet you are asking yourself what’s in here for you.

What are the benefits that BtN can bring to the table?

Understanding Reports with Segmentation

Segmentation leads to more personalized and meaningful interactions.

It boosts effectiveness and accuracy in your marketing activities.

With By the Numbers, you can apply segmentation to your reports.

For instance, let’s consider a Cohort Retention Report.

By selecting a segment, the report adjusts to display relevant data for that group, helping you identify which segments are performing well or need more attention:

From the’ Segment’ drop-down menu,  select the custom or pre-built segment you’d like to use to filter the report.

The report’s values will then adjust to reflect the desired segment, allowing you to zero in on which customer segments are over or under-performing.

How amazing is this?

Shopify Customer Segmentation doesn’t have to be complicated.

By the Numbers simplifies this process, empowering you to segment your customers  and generate insightful reports.

And that’s what we do best at By the Numbers.
